“The principal’s role is to lead the school’s teachers in a process of learning to improve their teaching, while learning alongside them about what works and what doesn’t.”

Michael Fullan, The Principal: Three Keys to Maximizing Impact
In order to be effective change agent, a leader must embrace and model continuous improvement. I have learned this aspect of leadership is critical! During the past five years as an administrator at Walnut Creek Elementary, I have been challenged, pushed and supported as I have increased skills in the area of instructional leadership. Specific examples include:
*Leading teams in developing and implementing innovative approaches to challenges.. These approaches include partnering with the TrueSchool Fellowship, writing grants to secure funding for literacy and SEL, and collaboration with WCPSS leaders to improve MTSS processes.
*Honest yet helpful feedback on all evaluations. Feedback provides clarity for next steps in professional development. The feedback is delivered in a way that teachers are able to receive and then apply to increase student achievement.
*Targeting student learning needs through flexible grouping.... Teachers analyze grade level data with an openness to discourse about achievement in one another's classrooms. The students on a grade level are seen as "our students", as opposed to "my students."
*Increased exposure to PBL and planning with a focus on the power of integration to increase student interest = increased achievement.
*Increased focus and expectation for differentiation through interventions, as well as a better understanding of the MTSS process.
*Starting a Data Team to analyze the data that will be addressed by other SIP committees, PLCs and individual teachers.
*Building capacity and efficacy of PLTs.... Sharing data in a format that enables teachers to have rich conversations about student achievement and best-instructional practices.
*Increased usage of best-practices such as Hattie's research-based strategies.
*Collaboration with the academic coaches to support instruction.

Hello Kathy-- I'm writing because TrueSchool is so impressed with the work of the Walnut Creek TrueSchool Design team. As we've been reviewing teams' portfolios, your team's critical thinking and innovative mindset stands out as exemplary. We would like to showcase the work of Walnut Creek by highlighting your team as a model and case study--and sharing your awesome progress with a broader audience including district, state, and national education leaders. |
A note of encouragement and validation from my current principal, Mrs. Vonda Martin-Jenkins.
